The present investigation indicates that the Shiranish Formation is Campanian-lower middle Maastrichtian in age. On the basis of stratigraphic ranges of 54 planktonic foraminiferal species the Shiranish Formation at Sulaimaniah-Dokan Region, northeastern Iraq is divided into two assemblage zones and five subzones. These biostratigraphic subzones are defined and correlated with the Archaeoglobigerina blowi, Globotruncana elevata, G. calcarata (Campanian), Rugotruncana subcircumnodifer and the lower part of Globotruncana gansseri Subzones (lower-middle Maastrichtian). The Campanian-Maastrichtian boundary is accurately fixed on the basis of the presence of Globotruncana calcarata Cushman.
