    In the second part of the 18th Century, when the international traffic of slaves reached its top (and is also intense in the Portuguese domains of Africa to Brazil), the slavery in Portugal is subjected to legislative measures, which would then be extinguished. This article is based in a hundred of enfranchisements registered in the notary public's office, between 1756 and 1791, and tries to answer a triple question: who enfranchised who? How? Why? Based on the security the documents allow, it is defined the profile of the manumitted and the manumitted, settled the various ways of the most and the least completed enfranchisements and questioned the reasons for which they were granted.

    Dans la seconde moitié du XVlII siêcle, quand le trafic international d' esclaves était à son apogée (et est aussi intense des domaines portugais d'Afrique pour Ie Brésil), l'esclavage dans le Royaume est objet des mesures législatives qui, à la longue, conduiraient a son extinction. Cet article se fonde dans une centaine d' affranchissements enregistrés au notaire entre 1756 et 1791 et prétend trouver réponse a une triple interrogation: qui libérait qui? Comment? Pourquoi? Avec la sécurité permise par la documentation, est défini le profil des libérateurs et des libérés, éclaircies les di verses modalités de plus ou moins complets affranchissements et questionnées les raisons par lesquelles iIs étaient octroyés.
