    Based on documentation collected at Portuguese archives and at Public Record Office, it reconstructs the negotiation process of Portugal's accession to EFTA. It does not intend to be an economic work, but, instead, to identify eventual political motivations among the Portuguese partaking in the negotiations, tracing the strategy of the British government and its attitude towards Portugal. For that reason it starts in 1956 - year of the British proposal of a wider Free Trade Area -, on the conviction that the creation of EFTA resulted from two negotiable moments.

    Ayant pour base la documentation recueillie pres des archives portugaises et du Public Record Office, on a reconstitué le processus de négociation de I'adhésion du Portugal à l'AELE. Cette étude nayant pas un caractêre économique, l'auteur a eu pour objectif d'identifier d'éventuelles motivations politiques de la participation portugaise aux négociations en accord avec la position du gouvernement britannique et la position de ce dernier face au Portugal. Done, on a dü remonté jusqu' en 1956 -année de la proposition anglaise d'une vaste Zone de Libre Echange -, tout en ayant la conviction que la création de l'AELE s' est déroulée lors de deux processus de négociation.
