  • Resumen
    • From a single large sample of clay of Middle Miocene Balcombian age, 7,397 ostracod valves and carapaces were recovered, giving a calculated number of individuals of 4,425. These belong to 44 genera and 98 species. All those with sufficient adult representation, 66 species, are described and illustrated herein; the remainder are listed. Thirty-two species are described as new: Neonesidea chapmani, Macrocypris porcelanica, Macrocypria elegantula, Argilloecia truncata, A. bella, A. timida, A. kritheformae, A. acuticaudata, A. australomiocenica, A. supercylindrica, Australoecia argilloeciaformis, A. obscura, Pseudocythere micropunctata, Eucythere (Eucythere) parapubera, E. (E.) submytila, Eucythere (Rotundracythere) pseudosubovalis, Krithe nitida, Cytheropteron antipodum, C. albomaculata, C. parawellmani, Oculocytheropteron microfornix, Kangarina macropus, Pedicythere gladium, P. elegantula, Munseyella splendida, Bradleya praemckenziei, Xestoleberis paratruncata, X. cooki, Cytherella paranitida, C. parapunctata, Cytherelloidea australomiocenica, Polycope sanctacatherinae. Two new subspecies are described: Hemicytherura pentagona Hornibrook, 1952, minor sub sp. nov. Paijenborchella (Paijenborchella) solitaria Ruggieri, 1962, ponticola sub sp. nov. Thirty species with nomina aperta are included in the text and illustrated. A further 21 species represented only by juveniles are listed but not illustrated. Nine species have been previously described and a further four are tentatively referred to previously described species. The fauna is shown to be of marine tropical to subtropical origin and to have lived on the middle to outer shelf at a depth of between 70 and 150 m.
