    An analysis of what was being read is indispensable as a diagnosis to determine the interests of the learned culture. For the study of the second halfof the 18th century, there is an important collection of documents available, consisting of inventories (registers) of the books sent to the Real Mesa Censoria in 1769. Some of those inventories constitute the documental basis for this study. They consist of the set sent by the inhabitants of Palmela. The holders ofthe books mentioned in them belonged to a varied socio-professional range. The indications that can be taken from them provide important elements about the written world of a culture which is thus presented to as traditional, stabilized an unitarian.

    Une analyse des lectures s'avêre indispensable comme diagnostic pour déterminer les intérêts de la culture lettrée. En ce qui concerne la seconde moitié du XVllO siêcle, nous disposons d'une importante collection de documents, constituée par les inventaires de livres envoyés à la «Real Mesa Cens6ria» en 1769. Quelques-uns de ces inventaires constituent la base documentaire de cette étude. Ce sont ceux envoyés par des habitants du bourg de Palmela. Les détenteurs des livres appartenaient à un éventail socio-professionnel diversifié. Les indications qu'on peut en extraíre nous fournissent d'importants éléments sur l'univers écrit d'une culture qui apparaít à nos yeux traditionnelle, stabilisée et unitaire.
