This study draws the history of the appearence and the growth of the republican ideas and the debates they produced in the period before the British Ultimatum in 1890. The author focuses the Oporto city, which has played an unquestionable important role in the history of the Portuguese democratic traditions and where took place the first republic rebellion in Portugal on the 31 st January 1891.

Dans cet article on raconte I 'histoire de Ia manifestation et de I'afirmation des idées republicaines et des débats que ont apparus dans son intérieur, dans la période avant l'ultimat donné par I'Angleterre au Portugal en 1890. L' auteur centre son annalyse dans la ville de Porto qui a eu une place importante dans I'histoire des traditions democratiques portugaises et qui a presencié Ie 31 janvier 1891 la premiere révolte républicaine au Portugal.
