    El Trienio constituyó un hito en la historia española: durante tres años, la monarquía pasó de ser absolutista a liberal, y las ideas del Cádiz de 1812 pudieron por fin ponerse en práctica. Pero el haber tomado el poder no suponía haber conquistado las mentalidades: entre los muchos desafíos con los que lidiaron los nuevos dirigentes figuraba el de implantarse en el panorama político de su tiempo. El presente artículo se propone explorar una de las estrategias de legitimación empleadas por los liberales para conseguirlo –la escenificación de la génesis de su ideología–, estudiando el repertorio iconográfico al que recurrieron. A través de estampas de distinta índole, veremos cómo se realzan los orígenes del Trienio. Y veremos cómo la retórica visual desplegada se inscribe en una tradición ampliamente europea.

    The Trienio was a milestone in Spanish history: for three years, the monarchy went from being absolutist to liberal, and the ideas of the Cadiz of 1812 could finally be put into practice. But having seized power did not mean having conquered mentalities: among the many challenges faced by the new leaders was that of establishing themselves in the political landscape of their time. This article sets out to explore one of the legitimisation strategies employed by the liberals to achieve this – the staging of their ideology’s genesis – by studying the iconographic repertoire to which they resorted. Through different types of prints, we will see how the origins of the Trienio were highlighted. And we will see how the visual rhetoric deployed is part of a broadly European tradition.
