La tesis que plantea Castoriadis es que el individuo es un ser de imaginación y para que esta capacidad se desarrolle a su máxima expresión se requiere de lo imaginario. En el ámbito de lo psíqui- co se encuentra la imaginación radical como fuente de circulación de representaciones. Esta imaginación radical se encuentra con lo social, lo heterónomo, lo que le es ajeno. La imaginación percibe este encuen- tro de manera ajena, hostil y opresiva porque recibe una forma particular de una institución social que ha sido establecida por el hacer humano. Lo psíquico y lo social están unidos porque el individuo particular constituye un fragmento de la sociedad bajo la cual desarrolla su existencia. El camino hacia la autono- mía y la libertad se comienza a transitar cuando el individuo mediante su capacidad imaginativa cues- tiona lo establecido, interroga la validez sobre la que se edifica lo dado y se transforma a sí mismo y a la sociedad. Le toca al individuo tomar consciencia de que es un ser finito, mortal, que le toca vivir un espacio y un tiempo limitado, y le corresponde la decisión de gestionar por sí mismo la manera como quiere explayar su existencia en ese tiempo. The thesis raised by Castoriadis is that the individual is a being of imagination and for this capacity to develop to its maximum expres- sion, the imaginary is required. In the realm of the psychic, radical imagination is found as a source of circulation of representations. This radical imagination meets the social, the het- eronomous, what is alien to it. The imagination perceives this encounter in an alien, hostile and oppressive way because it receives a particular form from a social institution that has been established by human doing. The psychic and the social are united because the particular individual constitutes a fragment of the society under which he develops his existence. The path to autonomy and freedom begins to travel when the individual through his imaginative capacity questions the established, questions the validity on which the given is built and transforms himself and society.
It is up to the individual to become aware that he is a finite, mortal being, that he has to live a lim- ited space and time, and it is up to him to decide to manage by himself the way he wants to extend his existence in that time. This article analyzes Castoriadis’ ideas regarding radical imagination, the individual, autonomy and freedom.
