    The central claim of this article is that researchers must take into account the role of the state behaviour in accounting for the differences in the nature of worker's mobilization, specially during periods of political uncertainty and opened expectations like processes of political transition from authoritarian regimes. The actual behaviour of state authorities in Portugal during the seventies shaped the perceptions of the workers regarding the question of what they could not do, and this in turn had an effect on what they actually did, that is, on their set forms of protest.

    Cet article est basé sur I' affirmation suivante: les chercheurs doivent prendre en compte Ie comportement de l'État face aux differentes natures de la mobi- lisation des travailleurs, en particulier durant les périodes d'instabilité politique et d'espoir nouveau comme lors d'un processus de transition politique aprês la chute d'un régime autoritaire. Le comportement du gouvernement portugais pendant les années soixantedix adhêrait aux vues des travailleurs quand à ce qu'ils pourraeint ou ne pourraient pas f'aire, ce qui eut une répercution sensible sur ce qu'ils firent, c' est à dire sur leurs di verses façons de manifester.
