Oliveira Martins (1845-1894) was an example of intellectual statesman. The philosophy of national history of this "Portuguese Michelet" is one of the most outstanding from our culture in the last 200 years. In this article, the author wishes to study his essential lines. His point of departure is that historiographical operation is inseparable from the construction of the present sense and the prospection of the future.

Oliveira Martins (1845-1894) a été un exemple d'intellectuel politique: un socialiste de chaire parmi nous. La philosophie de 1'histoire du Portugal de ce "Michelet portugais" c' est une des plus importantes de la culture nationale pendant les derniêres 200 années, Dans ce travail I' auteur essaye d'identifier ses principales lignes de force. Le point de départ c'est I'idée que l'opération historiographique est inséparable soit de Ia construction du sens du présent, soit de Ia prospection de l'avenir.
