En este artículo se propone un análisis de la poética del imperfecto narrativo español basado en el concepto de trasfondo narrativo, entendiendo el trasfondo en términos temporales de un modo análogo a la distinción de figura y fondo en la percepción visual. Se argumenta que el imperfecto narrativo sitúa el evento como trasfondo de manera estilísticamente marcada. Las propiedades del trasfondo en interacción con el carácter marcado de la forma en cuestión, con las características inherentes del evento y con el contexto dan lugar a una plurisignificación expresiva que es el rasgo esencial y constitutivo de la poética del imperfecto narrativo en la narración ficcional

This paper deals with the poetics of the so-called narrative imperfect in Spanish. In an attempt to explain the poetic effects of the narrative imperfect, an analysis based on the concept of narrative background is proposed. According to the approach taken in this study, the narrative background is understood in temporal terms in a manner that is analogous to the figure-ground organization in visual perception. The claim made in the paper is that the narrative imperfect situates the event in the background in a stylistically marked way. The properties of the background interacting with the markedness of the grammatical form at issue, the characteristics inherent to the event, and the context give rise to a plurisignificance which constitutes the essentials of the poetics of the narrative imperfect in fictional narrative.
