Resumen de A Batalha e a questão colonial

JOSÉ DE CASTRO, JOSÉ LUIS GARCIA

  • English

The examination of A Batalha, the most important newspaper of the syndicalist movement of the time in Portugal and the third largest daily newspaper between 1821 and 1933, does not corroborate the theory that modern colonialist ideology, which was underlying the policies that the regime of the First Portuguese Republic was trying to impose, had spread throughout Portuguese society and that the organised workers' movement itself shared the «wave of colonial nationalism» brought about after the British ultimatum or that it was indifferent to the colonial question.

This article is a presentation of the examination, wich suggests a new framework for the study of the development of anti-colonialist schools ofthought in Portugal.
