Do império luso-brasileiro do Brasil (1789-1822)

    Only recently has Brazilian historiography about the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth century begun to free itself from a strong national outlook. Drawing on works writen in the last few years, this article intends to lay stress on how deeply interwoven were Portuguese and Brazilian interests, on how the elite on toth sides of the Atlantic shared the same political culture, and on how much the 1822 Independence derived, not from a challenge to Portuguese rule, but from a struggle to assert hegemony within a Luso-Brazilian Empire.

    L'historiographie brésilienne sur la fin de la période coloniale ne se liberá d'une perception nationaliste tres marquée que depuis quelques années. Cet article ré- prend des travaux récents pour faire remarquer combien les intérêts portugais et brésiliens étaient liés, combien I' élite des deux cotés de I'Atlantique partageait la même culture politique, et combien l'Indépendence de 1822 fut le resultat, non d'une contestation à la domination portugaise, mais d'une lutte, à l'interieur d'un empire luso-brésilien, pour en assurer l'hégémonie.
