Numerous gradational forms exist between the ancestral genus Hedbergella Brönnimann and Brown and its offspring, Clavihedbergella banner and Blow. This fact, coupled with the inadequacy of the earlier diagnoses of Clavihedbergella, has made the correct classification of certain species of both genera difficult. It has also led some workers to advocate that all Clavihedbergellid forms be regarded as species of Hedbergella.
The present detailed survey through relevant literature and the observation made on material from Southeastern Nigeria do not support discarding Clavihedbergella. A case is consequently made for its retention as a distinct genus. A new definition, which eliminates the ambiguities in the previous diagnoses for the genus, is also proposed.
