This chapter presents the phenomenon of the sacred from a conceptual and semantic point of view. It discusses how the sacred, as a central element of the science of religions, has been addressed from different perspectives (sociological, phenomenological and hermeneutic); and proposes a definition that will allow us to appreciate how the sacred can become a key tool for articulating an interreligious dialogue based on mutual understanding and respect.
