  During the XXlh Century Portuguese people must have raised around 91 %, reflecting a positive moderate tendency that, however, suffered significant variations during the century. When we compare Portugal with the majority of the European states, Portugal would still be a place where fertility and mortality, both superior to the European average, kept a positive relation, creator of a physiological balance that could have promoted a fast raise in the resident numbers, if it wasn't the negative intervention of the migratory movements. Joining to the emigration, a constant in the contemporaneous history of Portugal was the migratory phenomenon of the last decade of the century, inedited factor in the Portuguese history, which brought enormous expectations.

  In this article, the author describes the Portuguese population evolution throughout the whole XXth century, analysing the behaviour manifested by the different demographic variables.

  Au cours du XXe siêcle, la population portugaise a augmenté de près de 91 %, en suivant une tendance positive modérée qui a cependant connu des variations significative tout au long du siêcle. En comparaison avec la majorité des pays européens, Ie Portugal est demeuré un lieu ou la fécondité et la mortalité, toutes les deux supérieures à la moyenne européenne, ont maintenu un ratio positif, à l' origine d'un solde physiologique qui, sans l'effet négatif des mouvements migratoires, aurait pu entrainer une augmentation rapide du nombre d'habitants. À partir de la derniêre décennie du siêcle, l'émigration, une constante dans 1 'histoire contemporaine portugaise, doit être rapprochée du phénomêne de l'immigration. Ce fait inédit de l'histoire portugaise génêre d' énormes expectatives.

  Dans cet article, I' auteur décrit l'évolution de la population portugaise tout au long du XXe siêcle, en analysant Ie comportement des différentes variables démographiques.

  Durante o século XX a população portuguesa terá aumentado cerca de 91 %, reflectindo uma tendência positiva moderada que, contudo sofreu variações significativas ao longo da centúria. Quando comparado com os maioria dos estados europeus, Portugal continuaria a ser um local onde a fecundidade e a mortaidade, ambas superiores à média europeia, mantiveram uma relação positiva, geradora de um saldo fisiológico que poderia ter fomentado um rápido aumento do número de residentes, não fora a intervenção dos movimentos migratórios, de sinal negativo. À emigração, uma constante na história contemporânea de Portugal, junta-se o fenómeno imigratório da última década do século, factor inédito na história portuguesa e em relação ao qual se erguem enormes expectativas.

  Neste artigo, a autora descreve a evolução da população portuguesa ao longo de todo o século XX, analisando o comportamento demonstrado pelas diferentes variáveis demográficas.
