  • Resumen
    • The late Cretaceous/early Paleogene succession in the Turayf area has been subdivided into two groups and five formations: a late Cretaceous Aruma Group (with the Zallum Sandstone below, and the A’ra’r Chalk, aboveI) and an early Paleogene Hibr Group (with the Hazm al-Jalamid, the Bardawil and the Turayf Formations from base to top). The Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary is marked by a break of varying magnitude.

Selected samples were chosen for the micropaleontological analysis of the succession. Fifty species and 5 subspecies of index foraminiferids (belonging to 10 genera and 4 subgenera) have been identified and utilized in the biostratigraphical zonation of the succession into ten biozones and three subzones. Four of these zones are characterized by their planktonic foraminiferid content, three by larger benthonic foraminiferids and three others were found to be poorly fossiliferous.
