A diverse palynoflora recovered from an 80 m-thick section of the Upper Devonian Hongguleleng Formation, Hefeng District, Xinjiang, China, comprises 34 acritarch and 21 spore species. Two new acritarch combinations are proposed: Dictyotidium fistulosum (= Cymatiosphaera fistulosa Wicander and Loeblich, 1977) and Micrhystridium wepionense (= Baltisphaeridium wepionense Stockmans and Willière, 1962b).
The acritarch assemblage indicates a late Frasnian-Famennian age, and is most similar to previously described Famennian assemblages from Belgium and North America. The spore assemblage, being quite poorly preserved, is difficult to compare with similar aged assemblages from North America, Europe, and China. The palynomorph based age assignment is in general agreement with a Famennian age indicated by associated brachiopods, corals, and plant megafossils.
A progressive up-section increase in the spore/acritarch abundance ratio and in the incidence of woody debris is suggestive of shoaling during deposition of the upper part of the Hongguleleng Formation.
