Evolution without nihilism: Scientific and philosophical perspectives that instill wonder and edification

    A menudo se sugiere que la evolución se opone a la fe y socava la posibilidad de un propósito humano trascendente. La cruda realidad de la selección natural, la inmensidad del tiempo geológico, la evolución extremadamente reciente del Homo sapiens y el claro papel del azar y la contingencia en la historia de la Vida son conceptos centrales de la teoría evolutiva que, para muchos, son extremadamente difíciles (si no imposibles) de conciliar con la fe. Esbozo varias características del pensamiento evolutivo, bien informadas científicamente, que amplían una visión de la evolución que, de otro modo, sería incompleta y reduccionista, y destaco varias perspectivas científicas y filosóficas que refuerzan la proposición de que la evolución no sólo deja espacio para cuestiones de fe, sino que también puede ayudar a fomentar el asombro, la reverencia y la humildad en los que la fe se basa.

    It is often suggested that evolution opposes faith and undermines the possibility of transcendent human purpose. The grim realities of natural selection, the vastness of geologic time, the extremely recent evolution of Homo sapiens, and the clear role of chance and contingency in the history of Life, these are all concepts central to evolutionary theory that, for many, are considered extremely difficult (if not impossible) to reconcile with faith. I outline several scientifically well-informed features of evolutionary thought that expand an otherwise incomplete and reductionist view of evolution, and I highlight several scientific and philosophical perspectives reinforcing the proposition that evolution not only leaves room for matters of faith, but it can also help encourage the awe, reverence, and humility upon which faith is based.
