Malgré le nombre d'inventaires et testaments du XVIème siècle, il est possible d'en analyser une vingtaine concernant le village de S. Paulo. Les patrimoines familiaux amassés par les colonisateurs étaient d'autant plus riches qu'ils contenaient des esclaves indiens et du bétail. Laproduction agricole était insignifiante et la terre, obtenue par "sesmaria" ou par une concession du Sénat municipal, était dépourvue de valeur. N'ayant pas de "engenhos" de sucre, au contraire des habitants de Santos et S. Vicente sur la Côte, les hommes de S. Paulo dépendaient surtout des indiens qu'ils amenaient du "sertão" pour pouvoir constituer un patrimoine.

Notwithstanding the little amount of 16th century inventories and wills, it is possible to analyse about twenty documents concerning the township ofS. Paulo. The colonists who hadIndian slaves and . cattle were the richest men.Agricultural production was insignificant and the ownership of land of no value because it was distributed either as "sesmaria" or as a grant from the township Senate. Without sugar mills (unlike the inhabitants of Santos and S. Vicente on the coast), men from S. Paulo depended on the Indians brought from the "sertão" to make a valuable property.
