One of the themes worthy ofgreatest attention from the historian is the donee captaincies. Either because it is presented as an indissociable element from the overseas portuguese expansion history, either because it reveals itself as a specialized field for one of the most important european world realities up to the revolutions advent, i. e., the landlord.
Extinguished in the Porto Santo island, in 1770, aproximately 330 years after the system's creation, the captaincies study has been faced according to varied criterion. This essay claims to produce a balance of the several attitudes of its historiography, emphasizing some of the lines considered of essential appreciation for its study, independently from the time or area of their application in the ancient portuguese atlantic space.

Les "capitanias donatoriais" constituent un des thémes plus dignes de I'attention de la part de l'Historien soit qu'elles se présentent comme un élernent indissociable de I 'Histoire de l'expansion portugaise d' outromer, soit qu 'elles se manifestent comme une spécificíté d 'une des plus importantes réalités du monde européen jusqu' aux révolutions libérales, c 'est à dire la seigneurie.
Abolies en 1770 dans l'Ile de Porto Santo, 330 années aprês la création du systerne, l'étude des "capitanias" a été envisagé selon beaucoup de critêres, Cet étude essaye un bilan des diverses attitudes de sonhistoriographie, en accentuant quelques lignes considérées essentielles dans I'appreciation des "capitanias" independamment de l'époque ou de son application dans l'ancien espace atlantique portugais.
