Resumen de L’operazione Mare Nostrum quale modello per una possibile evoluzione del peacekeeping multifunzionale

Chiara Ginesti

  • In an international scenario characterised by a growing complexity of actors and by manifold qualifications of notion of crisis, the conceptualization of peacekeeping operations has been the object of a comprehensive review in order to impose adjustments on peacekeeping operations to the benefit of their efficacy and effectiveness. Civilian and military elements have thus been introduced, so as to integrate a dimension of conflict management to deter from possible escalations and to contain conflict, to protect civilians and also to start peace processes. The new notion of “peacekeeping”, the Multidimensional Peacekeeping, and the main purpose of protecting the civilian population in conflict zone is the result of “revisiting” the elements and mandates of peace operations in light of the changes in the current international scenario and of today’s crisis situations. Then the reason at the basis of this work is to develop a debate on italian Mare Nostrum Operation in order to investigate the possible existence of elements of the recent peacekeeping evolution on that mission.
