  • Resumen
    • The living and dead assemblages were studied seasonally in order to determine the distribution and abundance of the benthic foraminifera in the Ria of San Vicente de la Barquera. Samples were collected from winter 1983 to summer 1985 to document the seasonal variation of the faunas and the various ecological factors in the intertidal zone.

San Vicente shows an exclusive marine influence and the distance to the connection with the open sea represents the only gradient affecting the faunas. Quinqueloculina seminulum, Ammonia beccari, Elphidium wilhamsoni, Haynesina germanica and Haynesina depressula are the dominant forms in the living assemblages. The stable conditions in the ria in terms of salinity variation are primarily reflected by both the high number of dominant species and the great values of the standing crop.

The dead assemblages exhibit important differences with respect to the living faunas, and thus, higher contents of agglutinated species and increased number of exotic tests were detected.

The living and dead assemblages have been analysed and compared using the Fisher α index, triangular plot of wall types and similarity index.
