Wittgenstein discute en el Tractatus 5.1362 la libre voluntad; este parágrafo es anticipado en esencia en los Diarios 27.4.15. Muy pocos comentaristas prestaron atención a la discusión de Wittgenstein; los pocos que lo hicieron están en desacuerdo tanto acerca de la estructura como de la contundencia del argumento de Wittgenstein. Ofrezco una nueva reconstrucción, según la cual 5.1362 no es un argumento a favor de la libertad de la voluntad, sino un argumento a favor de su primera oración, a saber, «la libertad de la voluntad consiste en la imposibilidad de conocer [ahora] las acciones que aún están en el futuro». En una sección final, comparo 5.1362 con las lecciones mucho más posteriores de Wittgenstein (a mediados de los cuarenta), según son reportadas por Yorick Smythies en 1989.

At Tractatus 5.1362 Wittgenstein discusses free will; the paragraph is essentially anticipated in the Notebooks, 27.4.15. Very few commentators paid any attention to Wittgenstein's discussion; the few who did disagree on both the structure and the cogency of Wittgenstein's argument. I offer a new reconstruction, on which 5.1362 is not an argument for freedom of the will but an argument for its first sentence, namely “The freedom of the will consists in the impossibility of knowing [now] actions that still lie in the future". In a final section, I compare 5.1362 with Wittgenstein's much later (mid-Forties) lecture on the freedom of the will , as reported by Yorick Smythies in 1989.
