  Grandparents are considered one of the main sources of social support network for the contem- porary family. Nevertheless, the literature about the involvement of grandparents in family life is still scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate grandparents’ contributions to their grandchildren’s family. The sample is composed of sixty members from twelve families with high levels of education and income, all living in Brasília, the capital of Brazil. Data collection was carried out in the families’ residence through the administration of a questionnaire to characterize the family system and of a semi-structured interview to detail grandparents’ contributions. The instruments were answered by grandfathers and grandmothers, their children and grandchildren, and their sons-in-law or daughters- in-law. The results show us that grandparents are prominent figures in the contemporary family, being the main source of support for their children’s family. Beyond the emotional support, they also con- tribute to doing the household tasks and taking care of the grandchildren. According to the grandpar- ents, their major contribution to the grandchildren is the fact that they are present and participate in their lives. The results emphasize the importance of the grandparents for the family and suggest that further researches focus on three generations, going beyond verbal reports

  Os avós constituem uma das principais fontes da rede social de apoio da família contemporâ- nea. Apesar disso, a literatura sobre o envolvimento dos avós na vida familiar ainda é escassa. Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar as contribuições dos avós para a família de seus filhos Participaram do estudo 12 famílias, totalizando 60 pessoas com níveis de escolaridade elevados e renda alta, todas residentes em Brasília. A coleta de dados foi realizada com os avôs, avós, filhos, genros ou noras e netos, nas suas respectivas residências, por meio da aplicação de um questio- nário de caracterização do sistema familiar e de uma entrevista semi-estruturadas. Os resultados mostram que os avós são figuras de destaque na família contemporânea, constituindo a principal fonte de suporte para a família de seus filhos. Além do apoio emocional, eles colaboram nas tarefas domésticas e nos cuidados com os netos. Segundo os avós, sua maior contribuição aos netos é o suporte fornecido por meio da presença e da participação em suas vidas. Os resultados reiteram a importância dos avós para a vida familiar e sugerem que pesquisas futuras mantenham o foco de análise em três gerações, indo além dos relatos verbais.
