Important episodes of biogenic siliceous-carbonate sedimentation took place in some basins in the Betic Ranges (Western Mediterranean) from the Late Oligocene until the Early Pliocene. The correlation of the sedimentary infills of the diverse basins has been difficult to establish to date, as a consequence of the large distances between the outcrops an the complex tectonic and paleogeographic evolution. In order to solve these problems and as a preliminary basis for further studies, nine silicoflagellate biostratigraphic assemblages have been defined in the studied sequences. Most of these assemblages are considered significant from the chronostratigraphic point of view althoug in some cases (E assemblage) mostly paleocological significance may be invoked.
Four new silicoflagellates species, Dictyocha acruata, Dictyocha cioiae, Distephanus involutus and Mesocena unda, are described and several new combinations are made.
