A Casa de Bragança remonta ao século xv, e reinou em Portugal de 1640 a 1910. Vila Viçosa assumiuse como sede territorial e residência ducal mesmo depois de terem subido ao trono. O Paço Ducal de Vila Viçosa, os edifícios, as colecções museológicas, os arquivos e a biblioteca evocam esta longa história, como era o desejo do último proprietário, Manuel de Bragança, o último rei de Portugal, que morreu sem filhos, no exílio, em 1932.

The House of Braganza dates back to the 15th century, and reigned in Portugal from 1640 to 1910. Vila Viçosa has been assumed as the see of its large estates and ducal residence even after they have ascended the throne. The Ducal Palace in Vila Viçosa, the buildings, museum collections, archives and library all evoque this long history, as was the wish of the last owner, Manuel of Braganza, the last king of Portugal, who died childless, in exile, in 1932.
