    The name of hunger: about the tale La Lupa · Starting from the Sicilian expression aviri la lupa, we try to fine-tune the nickname (formed not only by the noun, but also by the definite article, both always in italics in Verga’s work) of the protagonist of the tale La Lupa, emphasizing that it alludes not to the animal as such, but to its hunger. In Jeli il pastore, la lupa (also there in italics) is the name of a parasitic plant of the beans, which has nothing to do with the beast, except because it devours the host plant. The epithet does not want to mark the woman/beast, but the woman/hunger:

    la Lupa is not a particular being (an animal), but it is a will: sexual desire.

    Thus it becomes easier to understand the conclusion of the tale: when her son-in-law asks her not to chase him anymore, la Lupa, who is that chasing, now fixed on Nanni who keeps resisting her, will refuse to leave him alone;

    la Lupa can only vitally continue to entirely identify herself, even if at the cost of her own life, with that desire of hers

    Partendo dall’espressione siciliana aviri la lupa, ci si cimenta nella messa a punto del soprannome (formato non solo dal sostantivo, ma anche dall’articolo determinativo, entrambi sempre in corsivo nel testo verghiano) della protagonista della novella La Lupa, sottolineando ch’esso allude non all’animale in quanto tale, ma alla sua fame. In Jeli il pastore, la lupa (anche lì in corsivo) è il nome d’una pianta parassita delle fave, che non c’entra nulla con la bestia, se non perché divora la pianta ospite. L’epiteto non vuole marcare la donna/bestia, ma la donna/fame: la Lupa non è un essere particolare (un animale), ma un volere: il desiderio sessuale. Così diventa più facile capire la conclusione della novella: quando il genero le chiede di non cercarlo più, la Lupa, che è quel cercare, fissatosi ormai su Nanni che continua a resisterle, si rifiuterà di lasciarlo in pace; la Lupa non può che continuare vitalmente, anche se a costo della vita stessa, ad identificarsi tutta con quella sua voglia
