Surface Late Cretaceous sediments of the Nkporo Shale and its northern lateral equivalent, the Enugu Shale of the Anambra Basin, have been studied for their palynomorphs. A rich assemblage of pollen and spores including organic - walled microplanktons and algae were recovered from these sediments. Palynostratigraphic interpretation is based on the frequent and consistent association of the constituent miospore species similar to those known from coeval tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The stratigraphic overlap defined by the association Syncolporites boltenhageni, Periretisyncolpites phosphaticus and Monocolpites marginatus, within the assemblage is suggestive of a Late Campanian - Early Maastrichtiam age for the studied outcrops.
