En 1961 se celebró en Montreal la segunda asamblea general de la Sociedad Internacional de Psicopatología de la Expresión; durante dicho evento se anunció el lanzamiento del Bulletin of Art Therapy por Elinor Ulman y se determinó Amberes como sede del 3er congreso de esta entidad. Durante esta reunión también se acordó que uno de los 3 temas principales del congreso fuera la psicoterapia a través del arte, a cargo del psiquiatra barcelonés Joan Obiols Vié.Obiols describió su experiencia desarrollada en el Departamento de Psicoterapia a Través del Arte de la Clínica Universitaria de Psiquiatría de Barcelona (Profesor Ramón Sarró), creado en 1958. En su trabajo describe un estudio donde analizó las posibilidades psicoterapéuticas del arte como intervención única o principal para la mejoría de la sintomatología psicótica y neurótica; presentó resultados de 150 pacientes tras dos años de intervención, señalando su efectividad.El presente texto ofrece información biográfica del autor y su aportación teórica en relación a la historia de la arteterapia en España. Se brinda una revisión y discusión de su teoría a fin de reconocer su labor y rescatar parte del origen e identidad de la profesión, haciendo accesible información hasta ahora poco conocida. Fue realizado a partir de la revisión de documentos facilitados por sus hijos, los también psiquiatras Jordi y Joan Obiols Llandrich, que incluyen conferencias, artículos, resúmenes, correspondencia, entrevistas, actas de asambleas y congresos.El trabajo comprende seis apartados. Se observa que algunos de sus pensamientos siguen siendo contemporáneos a nuestro trabajo actual, tales como la relación terapéutica, la transferencia a la imagen, el principio antagónico, la equivalencia gráfica, la vida de la imagen y el triángulo terapéutico, este último descrito por el autor en 1974

In 1961 the second general assembly of the International Society for the Psychopathology of Expression was held in Montreal; during this event the launching of the Bulletin of Art Therapy by Elinor Ulman was announced and Antwerp was chosen as the venue for the 3rd congress of this entity. During this meeting it was also agreed that one of the 3 main themes of the congress would be psychotherapy through art, by Joan Obiols Vié, a psychiatrist from Barcelona.Obiols described his experience developed in the Department of Psychotherapy through Art of the University Clinic of Psychiatry of Barcelona (Professor Ramón Sarró), created in 1958. In his work he describes a study where he analyzed the psychotherapeutic possibilities of art as a unique or main intervention for the improvement of psychotic and neurotic symptomatology; he presented results of 150 patients after two years of intervention pointing out its effectiveness. The present text offers biographical information of the author and his theoretical contribution in relation to the history of art therapy in Spain, a review and discussion of his theory is offered in order to recognize his work and rescue part of the origin and identity of the profession, making accessible information until now little known. It was made from the review of documents provided by his sons, also psychiatrists, Jordi and Joan Obiols Llandrich, which include: conferences, articles, abstracts, correspondence, interviews; minutes of assemblies and congresses.The work includes six sections, it is observed that some of his thoughts are still contemporary to our current work, such as the therapeutic relationship, the transference to the image; the antagonistic principle; the graphic equivalence, the life of the image and the therapeutic triangle, the latter described by the author in 1974
