    A menudo se subestima la importancia del Bautista para la teología contemporánea. Mientras que la crítica psicoanalítica de la religión explica los ritos religiosos como una repetición obligatoria, el Bautista sustituyó las abluciones repetitivas por un bautismo único. Mientras que la religión alimenta a veces el fanatismo contra otros grupos, su sermón del arrepentimiento no pretende luchar contra los enemigos, sino contra uno mismo. Mientras que la crítica histórica difumina a Jesús en la niebla, podemos ver huellas de la historia en las tradiciones del Bautista. El Bautista ofrece también una solución para la crítica teológica que distingue tajantemente entre Dios y el hombre: Si Dios puede convertir a las piedras en sus hijos, también tiene autoridad para dar a un ser humano un estatus divino.

    The importance of the Baptist for contemporary theology is often underestimated. While psychoanalytic criticism of religion explains religious rites as compulsory repetition, the Baptist replaced repetitive ablutions with a one-off baptism. While religion sometimes fuels fanaticism against other groups, his repentence sermon aims to fight not enemies but one-self. While historical criticism blurs Jesus in the fog, we can see traces of the history in traditions of the Baptist. The Baptist offers also a solution for the theological criticism that sharply distinguishes between God and man: If God can turn stones into his children, he has also the authority to give a human being a divine status.
