Chewing qat in small groups is a significant aspect of North Yemeni culture. Qat sessions occur daily, separated by gender. They are not specifically task groups, but much of value occurs. As the sessions move through stages of forming, elevation, and Solomon's Hour, the participants share information, make decisions, and reinforce cultural norms. Indeed, the central feature of qat sessions is functional speech communication, not the drug itself. The analysis of qat sessions provides an opportunity to learn more about a unique culture, and to explore group developmental phases and problem solving.
