    En los siglos XVI-XVIII, el Mediterráneo vivió un auge en los avances y construcción de arquitectura militar a causa de los enfrentamientos entre la Corona Española y el Imperio Otomano que llevó a la formación de un auténtico borde marítimo a través de un sistema defensivo, basado en torres vigías y fortificaciones, que se reproducía con los mismos criterios de funcionalidad en los diferentes reinos costeros. Las defensas litorales suscitan gran interés por ser testimonio de la historia y la cultura del Mediterráneo; sin embargo, las torres vigías se encuentran en un grave estado de deterioro y marginalidad. Esta investigación pone en valor el entero sistema geolocalizando numerosas torres vigías en todo el Mediterráneo y estudiando, en el caso concreto de la provincia de Alicante, modelos de revalorización basados en la gestión patrimonial, el turismo cultural y el paisaje, fomentando el valor sistémico y la tradición cultural de la comunidad.

    From the 16th to the 18th centuries, the Mediterranean sea witnessed a rise in the development of military architecture due to conflicts between the Spanish Crown and the Otoman Empire. These episodes led to the creation of an authentic sea border, based on watchtowers and fortifications, that was reproduced in the different coastal reigns with identical functionality criteria. The coast defenses are of great interest since they are an evidence of the mediterranean history and culture. However, the watchtowers are in a critical state of deterioration and marginality. This research puts in value the whole defensive system through the geolocation of several watchtowers along the Mediterranean sea. It also suggests valorization models based on cultural heritage management, cultural tourism and landscape that, in the specific case of the province of Alicante, promote the systemical value of the watchtowers and the cultural tradition of the community.
