Resumen de Were the Contrasting Turco-Egyptian and the Anglo-Egyptian Conquests Beneficial to the Sudanese?
The central theme of this paper is to discuss and contrast two periods of Sudan’s experiences with two conquests; the Turco-Egyptian (1820/1–1885); and the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium (1898–1956). My abstractions from these two periods show that the first experience was one characterized by exploitation, harsh governance and lack of development. Furthermore, it shows that Egypt was acting from self-interest rather than for the welfare of the Sudanese.
In contrast, the second experience was one of development of the entire infrastructure of Sudan. Some of these developments were funded by British tax payers. Sudanese benefited from the newly-created infrastructure despite their critique of the British as an occupying or colonial power, although technically Sudan was not a colony. This paper will chart and assess the introduction of changes that were introduced in Sudan by both conquering powers.
