Permafrost (2018) is the first novel by author Eva Baltasar. Narrated from a lesbian point of view, it is ascribed to the so-called “intimate novel” genre. However, this perspective does not exempt it from a critical and social reflection on the effects of the 2008 crisis. Starting from this initial hypothesis, this article proposes an analysis of the novel from a new approach, linking gender studies and affect theories with studies of the crisis novel. From this perspective, the final goal is to conclude two things: on the one hand, that the protagonist’s sentimental variability is correlated of her job instability and, on the other hand, that this novel is one of a kind in that it combines precariousness and feminism to address the socio-economic consequences still felt in Spain today.
