    El objetivo de este artículo es reflexionar sobre la tensión que conlleva la vigencia del lema fundacional de la física, que afirma que la naturaleza es un libro escrito en lenguaje ma-temático, en el contexto intelectual de nuestro tiempo. Para ello, se explica en primer lugar el significado teológico de la imagen de la naturaleza como un libro. Después, tras llamar la atención acerca del hecho de que las corrientes principales de pensamien-to en la actualidad se encuentran muy alejadas de ese fondo teo-lógico, se plantea la cuestión de si es posible compaginar el lema de la física con los enfoques intelectuales dominantes hoy día. Se propone que la forma más sencilla de buscar esa compatibilidad consiste en concebir el libro de la naturaleza como un ejemplar de la Biblioteca de Babel, de Borges. Y se argumenta que la ver-sión física de la Biblioteca de Babel es la llamada hipótesis del multiverso matemático. Por último, se plantea la cuestión de si el estilo del libro de la naturaleza nos ofrece alguna pista para inclinarnos a pensar que nos encontramos ante un libro de autor, o más bien ante un ejemplar aleatorio de la Biblioteca de Babel.

    The aim of this article is to reflect on the founda-tional motto of physics, which states that nature is a book writ-ten in mathematical language, and the tension it generates in the intellectual context of our time. To this end, the theological significance of the image of nature as a book is first explained. Then, after drawing attention to the fact that the main currents of thought today are far removed from this theological back-ground, the question is raised whether it is possible to recon-cile the motto of physics with the actual dominant intellectual approaches. It is proposed that the simplest way to seek such compatibility is to conceive of the book of nature as a copy of Borges’ Library of Babel. And it is argued that the physical ver-sion of the Library of Babel is the so-called mathematical mul-tiverse hypothesis. Finally, the question is raised as to whether the style of the book of nature gives us any clue as to whether we are dealing with an author’s book, or rather with a random copy of the Library of Babel.
