Resumen de Common law reflections of a forensic “urge” in the art of letter‐writing

William E. Wiethoff

  • The relationship between the rhetoric of letter‐writing and the common law system of “writs” merits close analysis. The art of letter‐writing, as practiced by acknowledged masters such as Jacopo Sadoleto and Pietro Bembo, harbored a forensic “urge"—that is, a predilection for legal structure and style. Given this urge, the graphic aids provided to students of letter‐writing were similarly useful in training early British lawyers who also had to obey formal rules in order to master their profession.
