La figura de la abdicación de los monarcas ha sido tratada por numerosos autores, principalmente desde la perspectiva actual, analizando el contenido del artículo 57 de nuestra Constitución. No es ese el motivo de este estudio, que se enfoca más desde la perspectiva histórica de los hechos acaecidos en 1724, en los que en el mismo año se produjo una abdicación y una recuperación de la Corona por la misma persona que medio año antes había renunciado a ella. Vamos a intentar analizar ambos sucesos, la abdicación y la recuperación, con mentalidad jurídica pero siempre con perspectiva histórica.
