Resumen de Bioecological factors and processes in school failure and dropout

Susana Martins, Miguel Augusto Santos, Mónica Silveira Maia

  • School failure and school dropout are two problems that European educational systems still must deal with. Those problems are very complex due to the immensity of factors associated with each of them. The bioecological theory of human development provides a conceptual framework that can support a multi-level and multifactorial analysis of the variables associated with school failure and school dropout. In this paper, we are going to review some studies that have approached these problems using the bioecological model, to understand how risk and protective factors operate and which developmental processes are in place. This knowledge might contribute to the design of prevention and intervention plans to promote academic success.
