  • Resumen
    • Torture as a procedural system was a widely used instrument throughout the world, and very frequently throughout history. In the territories of the Hispanic monarchy, the procedure was used not only bythe court of the Inquisition but also by the secular justice of the different kingdoms. Thus, torture, by itself, does not justify the reputation that the Holy Office has always enjoyed, but it certainly did not help much. The procedure was applied regardless of the crime of which the defendant was accused, although it was morefrequent the more serious the sin was considered to be. Therefore, among the inquisitorial documentation wecan find torment sessions, above all, to sodomites and Moors, and, as far as we are concerned, also to convertsfrom Jews. In this paper we analyze the torment session that Caterina Calb, a Valencian convert accused ofmaintaining the beliefs, customs and traditions of her ancestors, had to face in 1519; and we relate her case tothat of other converts who also had to face the procedural mechanism of torment.
