Effect of Edentulism on postural stability and risk of falls in older adults: A Systematic Review

- ABSTRACT:
  
  An association between tooth loss and postural stability has been studied. Thus, edentulism could impact postural stability and increase the risk of falls. This review considered adults over 60 years, edentulous classification, comparison with completely dentate participants, and at least one stability test.
  
  Eight studies included participants aged 60 to 85 years. It was found to have a high risk of bias. The One-Leg Standing Time test was shorter in edentulous with a history of falls. There was a difference in gait speed, being greater in participants with a history of falls and when removable prostheses were used. On the Tinetti scale, 19 teeth or fewer, with or without a removable prosthesis, represent a high risk of falls.
  
  There seems to be a relationship between edentulism, postural stability, and risk of falls in older adults. Oral health should be considered within the general assessment of the health status of older adults. Keywords: edentulism, postural stability, falls risk, older adults.
