Thinking of virtues on behalf of the proper functioning State supposes extolling those that serve the interests of good relationships rather than their opposites. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of moral virtues in thinking about life in society, from the reading of the poem by Bernard Mandeville, The Grumbling Hive (1705). Trough this poem, the intention is to show how the vice is thought to be inseparable from virtue and how it acts as a base for society.

Pensar as virtudes em nome do bom funcionamento do Estado supõe enaltecer aquelas que atendam aos interesses do bom convívio, em detrimento de seus opostos. O objetivo deste artigo é, a partir da leitura do poema de Bernard Mandeville, The Grumbling Hive (1705), refletir sobre a presença de uma natureza egoísta e a necessidade da virtude na vida em sociedade. Por meio do texto de Mandeville, pretende-se mostrar como o egoísmo e o vício são constituintes da natureza humana e de como dão lugar a virtude, necessária para uma sociedade que almeja o bem comum.
