This introduction is designed to orient readers to “Patterns and Functions of Nonverbal Communication,” a Special Issue of The Southern Communication Journal. Both theoretical and empirical papers explore how nonverbal cues operate to affect communication outcomes. A brief discussion of nonverbal patterns preceeds an overview of the contributors’ studies.
