    El artículo busca mostrar el conflicto que generalmente se suscitó en el proceso de emancipación de las iglesias sufragáneas de sus iglesias matrices. Concreta los datos especialmente en el proceso que se produce en el Señorío de Bizkaia a finales de la Edad Media. Lo hace con un ejemplo, el del duro y largo conflicto de la iglesia matriz de Santa María de Lekeitio con sus sufragáneas de las anteiglesias vecinas de Ispaster, Gizaburuaga, Amoroto y Mendexa. El pleito es también un ejemplo de la mentalidad y métodos de actuación del grupo clerical, del funcionamiento de la justicia eclesiástica y las relaciones entre la Iglesia y las instituciones civiles, tanto del Señorío como de la Corona, en la época.

    he study seeks to unveil the conflict that underlay the process of emancipation of suffragan churches from their parent churches. It is specifically based on the data related to the process that takes place in the Lordship of Biscay at the end of the Middle Ages. It focusses on a case study, the gruelling and protracted conflict between the main church of Santa María in Lekeitio and its suffragan churches from the nearby anteinglesias (church porticoes) in Ispaster, Gizaburuaga, Amoroto and Mendexa. The lawsuit is also an example of the clergy’s mentality and methods of action, of the workings of ecclesiastical justice and the relations between the Church and civil institutions, both the lordship and the crown at that time.
