The fifteenth century began in the midst of ecclesiastical turmoil caused by a gridlocked schism with no signs of progress and an increase in polarisation of the parties involved. Benedict XIII, pope of Avignon, saw how his authority progressively waned, and his loyalty to the Crown of Aragon became the most powerful asset to secure his own power. The close relationship the Aragonese monarchs established with the pontiff, became the perfect scenario for Orihuela to put an end to its lasting ecclesiastical conflict with the Diocese of Cartagena, however, the dire developments in Europe at the time would not make things easy.
