    En 1830 la France ne savait pas protéger son patrimoine et elle l’a appris au Sud de la Méditerranée. L’École française de Rome y a contribué par son lien fort avec le Maghreb depuis 1881, lien qui a durablement traversé les contextes politiques. Une institution française implantée en Italie a ainsi été le pivot de dynamiques institutionnelles destinées à la protection du patrimoine maghrébin, un patrimoine structurellement lié aux territoires. Des travaux sur l’histoire de l’École permettent de commencer à mieux cerner les parcours individuels avec parfois des engagements personnels forts et une exigence d’authenticité dans la recherche du partenariat. Les réussites comme les échecs sont aujourd’hui précieuses pour permettre de dessiner les enjeux archéologiques et patrimoniaux de demain et pas seulement au Maghreb

    In 1830 France did not know how to protect its heritage and it learned this from the southern Mediterranean. The École Française de Rome contributed to this through its strong link with the Maghreb since 1881, a link that has lasted through the political contexts. A French institution based in Italy has thus been the pivot of institutional dynamics aimed at protecting the Maghrebian heritage, a heritage structurally linked to the territories. Work on the history of the École allows us to begin to better understand individual paths, sometimes with strong personal commitments and a demand for authenticity in the search for partnership. The successes and failures are valuable today in helping to shape the archaeological and heritage issues of tomorrow, and not only in the Maghreb.
