    This text introduces the special theme section titled Film Censorship in the Iberian Dictatorships. First, a general overview is given, commenting on some definitions regarding the censorship of cinema and art, including countries other than the Iberian ones. Then, the literature specific to the subject of the dossier is reviewed. The chronological and thematic structure of the articles is presented and commented on, showing how research on the censorship of moving images (cinema and filmed news) in Portugal and Spain during the dictatorships demonstrates that there were more similarities than differences in controlling what was seen and heard by the public at the time, which remained until the end of both regimes.

    Ce texte introduit le dossier thématique intitulé La censure cinématographique dans les dictatures ibériques. Dans un premier temps, un état général de l’art est proposé, dans lequel sont commentées quelques définitions de la censure du cinéma et des arts, englobant des pays autres que ceux de la péninsule ibérique, pour ensuite passer en revue la littérature spécifique au thème du dossier. La structure chronologique et thématique des articles est présentée et commentée, montrant comment la recherche sur la censure des images en mouvement (cinéma et actualités filmées) au Portugal et en Espagne pendant les dictatures révèle qu’il y a plus d’aspects communs que de divergences. L’objectif de contrôler ce qui était vu et entendu par le public de l’époque a perduré jusqu’à la fin des deux régimes.

    Este texto introduz o dossier temático intitulado Censura ao cinema nas ditaduras ibéricas. Num primeiro momento é feito um estado da arte geral, no qual são comentadas algumas definições que caracterizam a censura ao cinema e às artes, abarcando outros países para além dos ibéricos, para em seguida ser feita a revisão da literatura especificamente para o tema do dossier. É apresentada e comentada a estrutura cronológica e temática dos artigos, mostrando como a investigação sobre a censura às imagens em movimento (cinema e notícias filmadas) em Portugal e Espanha, durante as ditaduras, revela que existem mais aspectos em comum do que divergências, permanecendo até ao fim de ambos os regimes o objectivo de controlar o que era visto e ouvido pelo público da época.
