  Se determinó la edad y el crecimiento del machuelo, Opisthonema oglinum (Le Sueur, 1818), utilizando el cleitrum de 771 ejemplares capturados en la isla de Margarita, de noviembre de 1986 a octubre de 1987. El recuento de zonas anuales en los cleitra permitió establecer tres grupos de edad. Las curvas teóricas de crecimiento en longitud y peso se ajustaron de acuerdo con los valores de los parámetros del modelo de von Bertalanffy: L∞ = 29.8 cm; P∞ = 360.2 g; K = 0.47; t∞ = –1.00.

  Age and growth of the Atlantic thread herring, Opisthonema oglinum (Le Sueur, 1818) was determined from the cleithra of 771 individuals caught at Margarita Island, from November 1986 to October 1987. Three age groups were found in the annual zones of the cleithra. The theoretical growth curves for length and weight were adjusted according to the values of the von Bertalanffy model parameters: L∞ = 29.8 cm; W∞ = 360.2 g; K = 0.47; t∞ = –1.00.
