    José Manuel Tengarrinha was one of the first Portuguese historians to make an overarching study of the history of the periodical press in Portugal, from its beginnings to the establishment of the First Republic and, from a structural perspective, of the rural and urban social conflicts in Portugal, from the mid-eighteenth century to the emergence of the Estado Novo. This collective article, with an evocative character, includes: a brief intellectual biography of the late historian, highlighting the most striking features of his historiographical work; an appraisal of his contribution to the knowledge of social struggles in Portugal; and a brief personal evocation by a colleague who closely followed his historiographical and civic journey.

    José Manuel Tengarrinha a été un des premiers historiens portugais à construire une étude globale de l›histoire de la presse périodique au Portugal, de ses débuts à l›établissement de la Première République et, d›un point de vue structurel, des conflits sociaux ruraux et urbains au Portugal, du milieu du XVIIIe siècle à l›émergence du Estado Novo. Cet article collectif, au caractère évocateur, comprend: une brève biographie intellectuelle du défunt historien, mettant en évidence les traits les plus marquants de son travail historiographique; une évaluation de sa contribution à la connaissance des luttes sociales au Portugal; et une brève évocation personnelle par un collègue qui a suivi de près son parcours historiographique et civique.

    José Manuel Tengarrinha foi um dos primeiros historiadores portugueses a construírem estudos de conjunto sobre a história da imprensa periódica em Portugal, dos seus primórdios à instauração da I República e, numa perspectiva estrutural, sobre os conflitos sociais, rurais e urbanos, de meados do século XVIII até à emergência do Estado Novo. Neste artigo colectivo, de carácter evocativo, inclui-se: uma breve biografia intelectual do historiador, salientando os traços mais marcantes da sua obra historiográfica; uma apreciação do seu contributo para o conhecimento das lutas sociais em Portugal; e uma breve evocação pessoal de um colega que acompanhou de perto o seu percurso historiográfico e cívico.
