This paper follows the journey of a monolithic column of Mons Claudianus grey granite from the Eastern Desert of Egypt to the city of Rome. It examines the issues and challenges involved in the quarrying, transport, and final use of such large-scale architectural pieces, using comparative evidence to highlight the enormous scale of the operations as well as the motivations behind such endeavours. For Brian, a much-valued colleague and friend for over 25 years, this offering brings together our individual research interests – and already I can hear you ask, ‘but how did they do that?’!
